I remember being disappointed that he'd reused it and that he'd gone ahead and done "The Beautiful Game" - this was right around the time that I became a fan of his - because I was really curious to see what a Phantom sequel would be like. And when I heard the music from "Love never dies", there was a lot that I liked, "The Coney Island Waltz", play that at full volume, "Til I hear you sing", which proves to me that Andrew still has it as a melodist, "Beneath a moonless sky", which is just electrifying, "Once upon another time", "Dear old friends", which is like the sequel's version of "Prima Donna", "The beauty underneath", which I think is the rockiest he's gone since Whistle, "Why does she love me?", "Devil take the hindmost", especially the quartet version, and "Love never dies" itself. Also love the way bits and pieces from "The Coney Island Waltz" turn up in other parts of the score. I think it had potential. They could have done it so that it wouldn't have harmed the original? I just thought the idea of the Phantom fleeing to America and living in Manhattan at the turn of the century was very intriguing musically and dramatically. And of course if you were the Phantom, of course you'd go there where they couldn't catch you so easily. | |
