I wasn't there so I don't know for sure, but I suspect vocalists on other people's albums are hired just like musicians are: contractors for a set fee. Rory was paid for his time singing the first time around; Mrs. Loud was too. So were Roy Bittan and Sid McGinnis, and whoever else played on the album. The New York Philharmonic. Ellen probably doesn't get a royalty from Paradise. Yes, it seems unjust that a featured duetist doesn't get a royalty as a performer, but there's never a guarantee the duet will be a hit. Frankie Miller's only getting a royalty from "Tears" because he wrote it, not because he sang it with Bonnie. Rick Derringer is not getting a royalty for his killer guitar solo on the song "Faster Than The Speed Of Night" because he too is just a hired musician on that track. | |
