| Theatrical show pleases Meat Loaf fans at Arena By Sarah D'Esti Miller Press & Sun-Bulletin Meat Loaf started out his career as a Broadway stage performer in "Hair," and he still knows how to put on a show, which he did Wednesday night for roughly 2,300 adoring fans at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. People with tickets near the sides of the stage were relocated two sections over, whether to make the house look fuller or to accommodate a larger-than-anticipated stage, is unclear. What was very clear is a lot of people were angry. Moving on, Meat Loaf's show is theatrical (almost as much as watching the seating fiasco before the show), from the opening play-acting of "Paradise By the Dashboard Light" right through the "cast" bow at the end of the show. He doesn't chit-chat with the audience a lot. He just does his thing as he has for the past 30 years, since "Bat Out of Hell" skyrocketed him to fame. Most of the audience looked like they were somewhere between taking their road test and buying their first house when "Bat I" first came out and they loved every minute of it. People danced, waved their arms and pumped their fists as Meat Loaf and his very excellent band went through "Bat Out Of Hell," "All Revved Up with No Place to Go," "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad" and "You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night)." They rocked out to "I Would Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)," "Life is a Lemon and I Want My Money Back," and "Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through." Meat Loaf had videos, lights and even giant air-filled dolls of the band members, although the significance of that is lost on me. It was a fun touch, though. Meat Loaf also did numbers from his recently released final "Bat" album, including "The Monster is Loose," "Blind as a Bat," "If It Ain't Broke, Break It" and "Seize the Night." You gotta hand it to songwriter Jim Steinman, who wrote every song just mentioned except "Monster." Steinman's been writing the same song for 30 years and it comes out a hit every time and most of the time it's for Meat Loaf. Meat Loaf's showmanship was great, as was his material. As for his singing, well, it could have been better, but it hardly mattered to the guy playing air guitar on the floor. Two out of three ... never mind. | |
