> Was it the same people demanding Read'Em and Weep that > were behind the hype for Cry Over Me? > The handling of hype in 1983 for Barry Manilow's releases were probably different somewhat than the people crying classic to "Cry Over Me" and the characteristics of the releases are much different in terms of the actual versus the hyped demand. Diane Warren's reputation notwithstanding, there was a time when her songs were considered automatic hits by the ones in her media circle of fans. Some of that reputation is hard to refute but not all of her songs have the same glisten as every other. Her songs are highly dependent on production, more so than other songs by more innovative composers, such as Jim is, in my opinion. Barry Manilow's version which hit the charts on the top 40 lists in the week of release in November 1983, was probably on the charts because like Warren later, his works were also considered to be automatic hits by his media fans. Having Clive Davis at the helm of Arista probably did not hurt much. But the song, I believe, rose in the standings on the charts because the song was quite a gripping one at that, which anyone could have related to. Unlike a Warren composition, there wasn't really much on the production side that seemed to make a difference. Manilow's voice and delivery, and the strength of the song itself, gave the combination its rise in standing, in my opinion. Bear in mind, however, that what production there was, was done by Jim himself who maximized these qualities. Therefore the demand I refer to is in that which generated itself in radio station requests for its airplay. The short answer is, probably not. | |
