During 1998-2001 "Tanz" producer Andrew Braunsberg and Steinman's manager David Sonenberg tried to produce "Tanz Der Vampire" on Broadway. Several readings and workshops took place at the Chelsea Dance Studios in New York City. These featured the original Count von Krolock in Vienna, Steve Barton. The "Dance Of The Vampires" English demos were recorded a month after these initial readings (apparently.) The Chelsea Dance Studios reading/workshop took place in April. The demos took place in May and after. On 21 July 2001 original Count von Krolock Steve Barton was found dead. Michael Crawford ("The Phantom Of The Opera") was announced as von Krolock in a Broadway production that would premiere April 2002. The script that you see here, which is from November 2001, is supposedly written by Jim Steinman, David Ives and John Caird based on the original libretto by Michael Kunze. In other words, it was intended to be used for the Broadway production in 2002. Then along came 11 September which changed everything. "Dance Of The Vampires" was delayed back to November 2002 and creative team members were replaced, along with some cast members bowing out. The show that made it to Broadway is a shadow of the German show (which you saw) and this powerful script I sent you the link for. This script, to me, is superior in some ways to what was in Vienna. I love it. It contains some of Steinman's most profound writing yet. "Neverland" and "The Dream Engine" didn't really touch me, "Dance Of The Vampires" November 2001 script was inspirational. Please follow the link and read the script sometime. It is a MUST for all Steinman fans. I only wish THIS version could be mounted sometime. | |
