Maybe its me, but I completely fail to see any significant conflict between Billy Joel fandom and Elvis Costello fandom.

For the record, I've only had a handful of "favorites" or "pet bands" in music since I took a serious interest in it when I was about 11, and it went like this:

Weird Al Yankovic (1984 - 1986, I was not what you would call "serious about music" at this time.)

Billy Joel (1985 - present, sort of: I'm a lapsed Joel fan. I still love his music, but rarely listen to it.)

Alice Cooper (1988 - present, sort of: Haven't bought an Alice disc since the mid- 90s "Last Temptation," but I saw him live in 2004. Also, I really only care for the post- 70s stuff)

Twisted Sister (1989 - present. I still listen to these guys on a regular basis. Some of the thematic elements of Dee Snider's songs - healthy rebellion, the saving power of rock n' roll - remind me of Jim, as does Dee's woeful underappreciation by everyone. Snider writes simple songs, but IMO is responsible for some of the greatest riffs / hooks in rock music. Saw them play live on their reunion tour in 2003, and they were fucking awesome, hadn't missed a beat.)

Meat Loaf / Jim Steinman (1991 - present. Nuff said.)

Warren Zevon (1992 - present. Wonderful songwriter, though his albums are a mixed bag of styles, and some take more getting used to than others. Occasional Steiman-like flourishes, particularly the dark & dry wit, though his songs are far more grounded in the real world.

I like plenty of other artists, but none have grabbed me so wholeheartedly as the above in 15 years. That probably means I got old and stopped evolving, so I might as well just die. Oh well.
