Bat Out of Hell remains one of the highest selling albums of all time, with 37 million units shifted worldwide. His movie career includes memorable appearances in blockbusters like The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Fight Club. And he's still not sporting anything less than an XXL waistline. Naturally Meat needs a live show to match, and Bat Out Of Hell III: Seize The Night is just that: a sprawling 150 minute epic, replete with eight-piece band, jets of fire, scantily clad women, and lashings of finger shredding guitar virtuosity. At its most exuberant the show was some spectacle. The mini-opera Paradise By The Dashboard Light - a teenage romantic tête-à-tête played out between Meat and his female backing vocalist - opened in some style, capturing all the theatrical brilliance of long-serving collaborator Jim Steinman's compositional skills in a lusty ten minutes. Chartbusting power ballad I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That) packed in more white-knuckle drama than a triple heart bypass. Rock'n'Roll Dreams Come Through gave his flamboyant dual guitarists plenty of opportunity to trade licks. A short interval allowed the big man to draw breath while letting the audience get all dewy eyed over a montage of Meat Loaf screen highlights. OTT comic book themed thriller In The Land Of The Pig followed, as did soft rock duet (with Norwegian vocalist Marion Raven) It's All Coming Back To Me Now - a 1996 hit for Céline Dion, originally penned for Meat ten years prior. Quintessential rock anthem Bat Out Of Hell itself inevitably proved the show's apex, its crashing, cinematic chorus sending Loaf and band out to a cacophonous ovation. Night seized. | |
