sadly I've never heard Only When I Feel. :o( Or Speaking in Tongues. Or the new Braver.
In fact, the only new ones I got at the time were Body and Not Allowed To Love from the Over The Top performance a few years back. Oh how exciting it was to hear Body then. And oh how exciting that it would probably be on Bat 3... :o(.
ANYWAY. My understanding is that Jim threw together If It Ain't Broke, Break It! for Wuthering Heights from amongst his works in progress, and it then naturally progressed to Only When I Feel. I Don't think it has its roots in any stage show, but I don't really know for sure.
He apparently told Desmond and Meat that it shouldn't be on TMiL, cause it's not even a whole song, just a fragment. So that's when Desmond decided to pad it out with crap to reach the mystical 4 minute mark, I guess. Yay.
As for when it started being written, I dunno? But if Ryan was here he'd tall you about the song Title "You Break It, You Bought It" which is said to have originated around the time of Celine's Falling Into You.
So perhaps You break It You Bought It begat If It Ain't Broke,, which begat only When I Feel?
