This is really interesting to me as I just switched to Ubuntu Linux after using XP for the past 3 years.
I'm still getting used to it, but I'm amazed at how much faster it is overall even with the full desktop effects and whatnot. Overall, I think it's done a lot to keep a 3 year old computer going.
