And of > course the neverland reference being him thinking aloud of > what he thinks of Peter Pan. I think that you really have a handle on the kinds of adaptations that Jim's music is capable of. Taking Von Krolock's role and adapting it to the context of Captain Hook is an appropos one, because the villians are the things. However, one point is that in this, if we are thinking of Peter Pan as Barrie's work, or Neverland as Jim's work, there is much a different kind of villian. In 1983 Jim received the challenge and the impetus to modify his existing Neverland script (performed in 1977 in Washington, D.C.) and adapt it closely to Peter Pan. It was an interesting sort of project, and became that which has become discussed as Neverland since. However, the transcript for the play/musical on the site jimsteinman.com is the original 1977 Neverland, which has no such adaptation. So, one could think of the Peter Pan version as novelty, and not authority when thinking of Jim's Neverland. Not to say he may not still play with the idea in his head. He did after all, say that a performance to benefit the children's hospital would take place, in deference to the Peter Pan side of this story. In the original Neverland, which is the one that I think of having read the transcript and listened to the performance, there are characters with similar names but not similar characterizations. There is indeed a Wendy. Wendy, in The Dream Engine of 1969 which preceded it, was called "Girl". Wendy and Girl are almost identical in character between the two plays. However she is much more developed in Neverland. Bear in mind that I do not have three hours of The Dream Engine, but I have listened to the performance which is not that long and I have read the transcript of that as well. In the original Neverland, there is a character called "Hook". In this, the character is much like a combination of the Police Official and Psychiatrist plus a few other features, as had been in The Dream Engine, where these two are also the same character disguised as the other. This character was altered in some significant degree between the shows, but there is no ship and he is not a Captain, not that I recall. And there is "Tink" which is not the same as Tinkerbell. What is more important is that there is no Peter. In The Dream Engine and in Neverland, there is Baal. > > Most likely this isnt what the song is really about, but I > could care less what it is really about, I care what I > want it to be about. Original Sin is a perfect song for the villainous character across all the themes. The reason is because Jim wrote concerning villainous behaviors he observed in others. Whether be a vampire or a city official/parent, there is the same thread of usurpation and control that pervades their intentions. "It's not enough..........." > > Also, supposing Jim still reads the board I would just > like to suggest picking up the new WWE Ladder Match DVD > set. I dont know if you are a fan of ladder matches, but > it has NINE FULL HOURS OF GOODNESS! (21 matches total) Sounds like fun. I used to watch WWF in the seventies. | |
