Very disappointing. I respect Chase's right to end it the way he wants, and his right to defy convention and audience expectation. He's said in interviews that, in real life, lots of random shit happens that is never wrapped up in a nice little bow. (But hey, David, this is not real life, its a fictional narrative!) And so he chose not to do a typical series finale episode. That's his right, and its the viewers right to think what he did sucks.

For me, even if we take the episode out of the harsh comparative light of a series finale, and look at it as "just another episode," it was weak. 30 minutes in and I was bored. The best part of the show may actually have been A.J.'s hot high school girlfriend. Oh, and Phil getting whacked.

I give Chase props for the way my heart was racing just because Meadow couldn't park her freaking car, but that was mostly because it was 10:04 and the show had a minute left. (The finale SO BIG we had to add five extra minutes!) Surely SOMETHING was about to happen. Nope. And then he uses Steve Perry, of all people, to provide the collective voice of millions of people who desperately want the show not to stop. (Does anyone really believe Tony is a Journey fan? Unles he played Tony Bennett but the jukebox was backed up, but that wasn't the implication.) And then it stops, lights out, plug pulled. I thought that was pretty gimmicky, personally. More like a trick worthy of a sitcom hack or a 90210 scribe.

But hey, its his show and he can do what he wants, especially at the end. When there's just a few pages left in the book, the reader isn't putting the book down, whatever happens.

The real loser in all of this is David Milch. First HBO screws him by cancelling "Deadwood" before the planned final season, then they hose his new show, "John from Cincinnatti," by debuting it after a Sopranos finale that surely had half of its audience turning the TV off in disgust.
