I was waiting for someone to challenge. :o) And yes the Orchestra interest me (interestingly, Bev Bevan's left their ranks now, he does a little 1950s revue or some such with his Bev Bevan's band these days). But they sound like they're trying to be A New World Record or Out Of The Blue in everything they do. Jewel and Johnny and a couple of the others sound so pointless to my ears. The other members of ELO just don't take the role of true artists. ELO part 2 is and always has been essentially an ELO tribute band. The bulk of their existence was justified by their performing Jeff Lynne hits, and all their new material is designed to emulate Jeff Lynne's stuff from the 70s. Jeff Lynne was the artist of the group, he is the only one who continues to change and evolve and develop in creating new things of interest. Compare A new World Record to Discovery, then to Time, then to balance of Power. And then to Zoom! (With a solo album and a heap of Wilbury et al projects in between). Fact is, Jeff Lynne wrote and crafted everything that people know as ELO. It's well documented in interviews that the other band members didn't even know what they were playing on during the New World Record sessions, they played what Jeff told them tom play and Jeff Lynne pieced it together to make his masterpiece. You say Zoom isn't a real ELO album? Just like bat 2 isn't a real Meat Loaf album, because it isn't Todd playin the guitar parts, kasim on bass, Roger powell on synth etc? And sure, it isn't lost on me that Roy Wood was the initial impetus and brains behind the whole thing, but history has shown that it's of little consequence (especially when apparently, despite their disagreements, the parting was amicable. Roy Wood is nothing if not artistically schizophenic). > > > I do find your critique of ELO Part 2 a bit harsh, whilst > i agree that Lynne put the group on hold in the mid > eighties to concentrate on his production career it must > be remembered that the 2 ELO albums preceding this > descision were relative flops.
