If I may jump in here with a possible interpretation ...
I believe what Brian is saying is, since Ann was following right behind me, if I hadn't found the pothole first, then Ann might have fallen victim to it rather than me.
Luckily, my sturdy blue jeans offered some protection, so there was no blood spilt on the streets of Budapest that day! And, if I was going to donate some blood while in Budapest, I would prefer it to go to the vampires, and not be wasted on the pavement! ;-)
