i think its both together: his lyrics and his compositions that make his stuff work as it does.
most of the partially-steinman stuff, if just lyrics or just music, doesnt reach the quality of (most of the) all-steinman songs.
I think the thing is that only he really understands his music, in a way nobody else could, and so only he can write the lyrics to his songs/compose the music to the lyircs in a way that makes Jim's songs what they are.
About WDTW: I think it's good because Jim and ALW really worked together on it, so that Jim wrote lyrics matching the songs. Dont think that would have been possible without proper teamwork.
