Interesting theory.
My comparison would be to the Terminator trilogy.
The first introduces the characters, is a bad ass movie and quite dark (bit like Bat out of Hell title track is).
The second is more stream lined, a lot longer, contains all the original characters but introduces us to a load more and explains what the hell is going on, and more of a kind of hyped up movie (more geared towards cinema rather than a B movie), pretty much like Bat 2.
Terminator 3 is okay (bit like Bat 3) with Arnie (like Meat) back in his role, with okay ideas but one of the most important elements, the director, is missing.
