| Since my name is being bandied about as screenwriter, I feel entitled to throw in my two cents ... (and, hey, since it's my birthday today, I also get a free wish; naturally, mine is for a decent English production of "Tanz"!) ;-) > Best idea, in a perfect world (IMHO): > > Crew > Produced by TIM BURTON > Executive Producer: ANDREW BRAUNSBERG > Associate Producers: RUDI KLAUSNITZER, ROMAN POLANSKI > > Directed by ROB ZOMBIE > Choreographed by DENNIS CALLAHAN > > Screenplay by JUDI BOGUS & JIM STEINMAN > From the musical by JIM STEINMAN & MICHAEL KUNZE > > Cast > Count von Krolock.........SEBASTIAN BACH > Professor Abronsius.......ROMAN POLANSKI > Alfred........JOHNNY DEPP > Sarah.........LAURA MICHELLE KELLY > Magda.........HELENA BONHAM CARTER Totally agree with keeping Callahan's choreography. It is the heart and life of "Tanz". We've seen "Tanz" work well with different sets and costumes (Poland, Hungary), but if you've seen the Japanese or NYC productions, it's apparent that the show just plain doesn't work as well without Callahan's dance moves. However, if a film is to be done, Polanski himself simply HAS to direct it! Burton and/or Zombie may be "trendier" and more newsworthy, but increased publicity does not necessarily translate into better filmmaking. We all saw what happened in NYC once Polanski was removed from the picture! Roman is the only one I would trust to steer the film aright, and keep it true to its original vision. Also, consider the score to date: Oscars for Burton = 0 Oscars for Zombie = 0 Oscars for Polanski = 1 As for Johnny Depp as Alfred -- NO, NO, NO! Plain and simple, he is just too old for the role. Depp is in his mid-40's, and Alfred is supposed to be a male ingenue, young and green. Depp's a pretty good actor, but even he couldn't pull it off believably. Like Ryan has stated, I'd rather see them go with talented unknowns for the younger roles -- but they HAVE to be able to sing the living daylights out of the material! I don't think "Tanz" can work with mediocre singers. No lame-ass Emmy Rossums or Gerard Butlers need apply! ;-) Since I haven't heard Bonham Carter sing yet, I don't know if she's got a suitable "belt" voice for Magda's numbers. Magda needs leather lungs, and Mrs. Lovett isn't what I'd call a particularly challenging role, vocally -- many of Sondheim's lead female roles are written for actresses with a limited vocal range (think Glynis Johns, Angela Lansbury, Elaine Stritch, etc.), rather than well-trained stage singers, so it's not really a good benchmark by which to judge. Singing prowess generally takes a back-seat to characterization and strength of personality in a Sondheim show. Sebastian Bach for Krolock -- don't know that much about him, but I don't think "Tanz" would benefit from going for a harder rock sound than it already has. I think the score kicks serious butt as it stands! ;-) My nod for Krolock still goes to Hugh Jackman, who not only is a pretty decent film actor, but also has the stage credits (and a Tony Award!) to his name. Like Steve Barton before him, he can sing, act AND dance (though likely not quite to the level of proficiency as Barton, but I can't think of anyone out there besides Jackman who can even approach Steve as being a "triple-threat"!) > Why Judi on screenplay?
