| Best idea, in a perfect world (IMHO): Crew Produced by TIM BURTON Executive Producer: ANDREW BRAUNSBERG Associate Producers: RUDI KLAUSNITZER, ROMAN POLANSKI Directed by ROB ZOMBIE Choreographed by DENNIS CALLAHAN Screenplay by JUDI BOGUS & JIM STEINMAN From the musical by JIM STEINMAN & MICHAEL KUNZE Cast Count von Krolock.........SEBASTIAN BACH Professor Abronsius.......ROMAN POLANSKI Alfred........JOHNNY DEPP Sarah.........LAURA MICHELLE KELLY Magda.........HELENA BONHAM CARTER And why? Here's why. The film of Tanz, on its own, is an unattractive proposition, even with Braunsberg, Polanski, and Klausnitzer potentially bankrolling the film. All the Hollywood people have seen is the NY production, and that won't sit well with them. The official English translation (dated July 1997) will sit even less well, and those on the forum who have seen it would agree with me. But ah-ha...Tim Burton buys the picture for his company (named, [sarcasm]creatively enough[/sarcasm], Tim Burton Productions)! Now it's possibly the next Tim Burton film! Gossip starts buzzing about what they call "Burton's Folly." Depp and Bonham-Carter are in, simply because Bonham-Carter is Burton's flame and if she can sing Lovett she can sing Magda. As for Depp, I'm picturing his character in "Corpse Bride." He'd make a good Alfred based on the German character. Laura Michelle Kelly is the next announced, and indeed she has a beautiful voice. As for Sebastian Bach, let's suppose when it is announced, Burton has also stated they're going for a more rock and roll approach to it. Then Rob Zombie signs on. Gasps of disbelief..."isn't this supposed to be Tim's film?!" critics everywhere exclaim. "Isn't he totally stylistically different?" Well, a) no, it started as Polanski's, and b) was Batman Forever Tim's film, much less his established style, even with his name on it as producer? ... I rest my case. In my scenario, Burton serves the purpose of getting the film seed money and also fueling publicity pre-release. Why Judi on screenplay? Well, aside from the fact that I have an obvious bias for her translation, it is also quite literally the only produceable English version of the German show out there to date (no, we're not counting the "Chelsea script," it changed too much). So in a perfect world, Jim insists on some dazzling effects from the Chelsea script, they are written in, the rest is Bogus' translation adapted to screen format and all is right with the world. Callahan is in to preserve choreography and staging for the most part. The ensemble is basically ex-Tanz chorus members. The other leads are minor celebs, B-list, C at most, who need a job and can serviceably play the roles. And that's how I would do it. > Pic of Burton & Depp together on the Sweeney Todd set. > > Still think Depp as Krolock, and Burton directing could > work wonders on a Tanz movie; really dark & gothic, with > less comedy, and maybe a new song from Jim? > > | |
