My take on the Jim mentioned vs. not-mentioned thing. I don't think it's ever necessary to mention non-performers when performers are discussed. There's a lot of performers who did not design their performing persona. When you look at people who are actually making a living performing, quasi-puppets are the rule rather than the exception. A lot of them have a manager, producer, writer, designer, label executive or somebody else designing what they do. To expect a journalist or filmmaker to find out what about a performing persona originated with whom, and list it would be tedious. I also think a lot of Steinman fans have an inflated view of how much credit he deserves for the success of Meat Loaf. There's no way for me to know how much of "Meat Loaf" was created by whom, but even in the most extreme pro-Jim scenario, there's a lot of very important things that a performer can't be taught. | |
