I definitely don't think you should HAVE to pay for Rockman. That would damn near stop the chances of new members. I know I wouldn't pay to join a new site I knew nothing about.
But I have seen it work a few other ways.
For instance the Third Eye Blind site 3eb.co.uk has a donations section on the side of the page with a goal they'd like to meet, and already have. You can view the members who have donated and the amount. I don't know if you get anything for donating, I have yet to do so :(
Another site I saw, a Fall Out Boy site, had the option of purchasing an "elite" membership for $5.00. The membership gave you access to the archive of live shows, remixes and demos hosted on the site. At least that's what it said, I also have yet to donate.
So, an option of having guests and members. Members would have access to the newsletter, maybe some songs if Rink would contribute, discount on merch (if there were any)...and a shiny gold star next to your name.
Just dreaming up a brainstorm.
