| When people listen to a pop song, their minds are not in a very analytical frame of mind. It's not like the mentality you have when you're taking notes at a lecture. So, when people hear a song, especially a very emotive one like IDAFL, I think the frame of mind is what makes them not identify the lines that represent "that". I think the listener's intelligence has little to do with it. I'm sure most people would get it if they were given that lyric typed out on an exam, and had to write what "that" represents. I'll never know if I would have gotten it or not, because I saw Meat's VH1 Behind The Music show before I heard the song. That Behind The Music episode was the first time I heard Steinman's music or his name. A couple years later I bought the VBO Meat Loaf set, based on remembering some snippets from the VH1 show that I had enjoyed. More than anything else, it was the snippet of R&RDCT played at the end of the episode that made me want to buy a Meat Loaf album. That was the first time I bought Steinman's work. | |
