I started my trip into the Gaiman universe by reading "Good Omens", which I absolutely loved, and then trying to find out about Gaiman's influence within that collaboration.
So I had to find out more about Gaiman's work in general and started by reading "Neverwhere", which I loved. I was hungry for more and continued with "Stardust", "American Gods" and then about everything I could get my hands on (omitting the comics, although they are well-done).

In my recollection, "Smoke and Mirrors" didn't fascinate me that much ... it kind of seemed like a collection of spillover material. I liked the novels better.

Guess I'm trying to say: even if you find "Smoke and Mirrors" not to be your cup of tea, try the novels, esp. "Neverwhere" (and "Good Omens" of course, if you haven't read that yet). And "Stardust". Or maybe not because you've seen the movie.

I usually don't want to see them because I fear they destroy my very personal interpretation, my imagination of the story's characters etc.
I would never be able to read the book with the same eyes again, thus lose something dear.
I think I'm not going to see the Stardust movie. Or maybe I am because I'm curious what the movie is like. Or maybe not because I could never read the book again.

Enjoy your holiday!
