| Two months ago, Jaqueline asked if anyone had seen the movie Stardust. Since the original thread it's so far down no-one not using flat mode will notice it, I think a new thread is appropriate. (And I say this because frankly, I don't see the point in starting a new thread for a reply to existing one, as has happened a few times this week.) But anyway, Stardust. It's just out in theaters over here in The Netherlands, and since tonight was the first night of a well deserved holiday*, I though, "what the heck." Let me say upfront that I know next to nothing about Neil Gaiman's work. Just started in his short story collection "Smoke and Mirrors" yesterday. And besides that, I usually despise movies based on books I've read. But frankly, it blew my mind. I don't know how it compares to the book, but I loved the story. Sure, it has all the hallmarks of a romantic fantasy epic, but done very well. Cast was suburb. I thought Claire Danes was cute in Romeo + Juliet ten years ago, but man, she's hot now. Michelle Pfeiffer wasn't bad at all, and indeed, De Niro alone was worth the admission fee. I can see how how the "ultimate date movie of the season" or however it was labeled might put people off, but even without a date (I know, all those available ladies wasted a perfect opportunity to date me, but hey, what do you do?) I had a great time. If this movie is in any a good reflection of Gaiman as a writer, I'm going to love the book I'm reading now. And if that proves to be true, I'll have to put Stardust at the top of my reading list. * I'll be leaving for the south of France tomorrow evening, and I hope to limit the physical contact with computers a bare minimum during the week and a half I'll be there. For a addicted html-wrangling internet-monkey like me, time like that is a must. | |
