Check out the Mayan end of the world. Supposedly it is supposed to happyen on Dec 21, 2012. This prediction is viewed by some as a great CHANGED in the world and not the actual END, but interestingly enough, some scientists think the Earth will perform a "Wobble" which could have a big impact on climate, etc.
Also Aztecs and many Native cultures that studied the stars had similar predictions of a great event occurring at this time. Just thought Id throw that in since I am an anthropology/archeology student.
