That's kinda convenient since anyone who thinks it will end on that date will have some explaining to do on the day after.

The only star that has more than an infinitesimally small effect on our planet is the Sun which, as it happens, is expected to reverse it's own magnetic field in 2012. But since that happens every 11 years anyway and we seemed to have survived the previous 400 million reversals I don't think there'll be a problem.
