I thought the stage production (on Broadway) was horrible, with way too much "drivel" done in a way too "fluffy" way. Yes, it's supposed to be "easy-going fun", but it can be done in a way that doesn't make it seem totally inane.... ABBA:s music is good (though I like Bjorn & Bennys post-ABBA work much, much more), but the orchestrations in the show are not character- and/or scene specific. Yes, people like to hear the good ole' tunes the way they sound on record, but that's not what musical theater is (or - at least - should be) about. The only track that I remember being somewhat scene specific was the one at the very end of Act 2... That being said, I do think the movie could work, for the very reason described above - the music was arranged for a record and not for a stage, unlike most other musicals which didn't work well on the big screen ("The Producers" is just one of many examples, and "Chicago" one of the few exceptions). "Mamma Mia" on screen will simply be like a very long music video, with some kind of silly plot to fill out the time between the songs - definitely good enough for a laid-back Sunday afternoon at the movies! /Jimmy G. > At the opposite end of the spectrum to Sweeney, but > equally anticipated, the first 'Mamma Mia' trailer has > just been released (see the link). > > Meryl Streep looks and sounds great.
