Are you talking about the Boss or Meat?
Because, for me, Bruce's vocals aren't really about the soaring melodies, but about a singer-songwriter expressing himself musically.
Bruce has always been very rough. His style seems like it would tolerate a substantial decrease in technical ability.
Look at Tom Waits.
