I saw it yesterday... One of my all time favorite msucials. I didn't mind thatv they cut some songs... but cutting the Ballad of Sweeney Todd was a huge mistake. Then there is Depp. A great actor... but not a great singer. after Hearn and Cariou and others I've heard live Depp falls so short. Sweeney has no power. It's a musical. I want to hear sweeney sing... not talk and sing lightly. Depp's sweeney was so totally obsessed that he came off so one note that he took so much that was entertaining out of the show for me. Burton got rid of so much that was fun about the musical. He made it very nice to look at, but it was missing the fun. I know many will disagree but that's my take. Depp would make a horrible Krolock... If Tanz ever gets made they need someone who can really sing. In Sweeney the best singers were the not well known actors. Toby and Joanna and Anthony. Turpin and Sweeney and Lovett and Pirelli were all acceptable singers but not as good as real stage actors. After I went home and watched the original and found it much more satisfying.
