The mother is young enough to find someone else, the child is young enough to get used to a new dad. At least he didn't leave them to poverty, debts or demanding obligations.

Guess I define family way narrower than you do, like spouse, kids and parents. Grandparents to me are already a stretch, siblings of parents and their off-shots could be called aquaintances.
Others who love someone I define as friends, not family. But then, I'm not in the habit of calling someone I met yesterday and talked with maybe for an hour a friend unlike many Americans seem to do.
