I'm intrigued by this whole "recognition" thing. It seems to me that a lot of people on this board feel Jim is due some sort of reconition that he hasn't received - but what exactly?

He is one of the best known songwriters of the last 30 years, especially when you consider that he does not perform his own material (BFG aside). For example, I don't recall ever seeing Diane Warren's name on the front cover an album, yet she has written more hit singles than Jim.

Most importantly, I don't think Jim craves the spotlight in the way that his fans would like to see it happen. He seems a very humble bloke, happy in the knowledge that his songs are appreciated, but not really needing to court the limelight to make himself feel valued. He even said that Meat was far more upset about the lack of equal billing on the orignal 'Bat...' album than he was.

As a Steinman fan, I don't feel the need to "convert" others or spread some sort of gospel, I'm quite happy listening to his works and appreciating them. I'll play a song to friends or family once in a while, and I'll probably mention it's a Jim Steinman song, but I won't try to force his life story on them, as I don't think it's necessary. I'm sure Jim's ego is doing just fine on it's own - after all, you won't find many songwriters who honestly believe they can fill a London theatre by setting their most famous songs to choreographed motorcyle gymnastics ;-)
