I think he's at his best when writing/producing albums, but he prefers theatre. Trouble is I don't really think he's as good a script/book writer, as he is a songwriter (the best).
Dream Engine/Neverland are weird and wonderful pieces, but also cringeworthy in places, and need a ton of re-writing?
I also think Jim coming in as co-writer on DOTV didn't help much (On a cold winter's night...anyone? Nope!!).
The reason Tanz worked so well, and to a lesser extent WDTW, is that they were written by other people, and Jim was brought in to do what he does best, write the (great) songs and produce the albums.

Agreed. The Dream Engine album could have been released by now, with a tour/show up and running. I'm sure Rinkoff has produced/mixed enough songs (10) for an album, and Ravenous could have released it?
The fact that the Bat musical still seems a long way off (probably 2010), The Dream Engine could/should have been a great interim project.

I'm keeping the faith for new material, but I don't think we will hear it soon (late 2009 if we're lucky)!

Well 'Body' to me is ALL new, and I don't hear any recycling. My favourite Steinman song, and I hope we get to hear a studio version....eventually!
