Yes. It's substantially darker. Each of the throughlines leads you to a place of hopelessness and helplessness. Batman can do some amazing things, but his heroic efforts are just as futile as pissing upstream. It drops the unexamined view of evil from the last Batman movie and decides to look a bit closer. It's still a fun movie -- particularly if you aren't too thoughtful -- and I recommend seeing it on IMAX. I thought Jim's musical with the Catwoman stuff was also very dark and works well. The joker is used in the movie to present a view of human nature in the grand story argument fashion and that requires him to be a little less fun and certainly less crazy than the jokers we've known in the past.
