I do not believe they are a necessity... I do believe they are a right. I do not own one because I live in a neighborhood that is safe and I do not feel threatened. My wife also doesn't want one in the house (though she believes people have the right to have one) and I'd rather not start a row with her...
I do have a BB Gun in the house... it looks like a real 9mm.
I also have knives, pepper spray, and many other wicked implements and if someone broke into my house I'd kill them... and wish I had a gun to do it with more safely. And if anyone ever harmed my wife or my children I'd get a gun hunt them down and exact vengence...
