Cue at least half of the potential audience for the musical shrugging their shoulders and buying tickets for "We Will Rock You" instead. For someone so involved in musical theatre, you seem to be very naive about the need to promote a new musical by using every trick you can lay your hands on. Put aside you personal feelings towards Meat Loaf for a moment and think about it logically. A new musical called "Bat out of Hell" is announced, to open in London... Most people who recognise the title are going to say to themselves - "oh, it's based on that Meat Loaf album". So, they read the article in the newspaper where Jim or the producers or whomever say: "this musical has nothing whatsoever to do with Meat Loaf and he is not involved in any way". So, these potential fans say to themselves - "oh, forget it then". Meanwhile the fans of musical theatre that you seem to believe will single-handedly make this a success take one look at the headline "Bat out of Hell - the musical" and say to themselves, "Bat out of Hell? - that's heavy metal. Not for me. I'd rather go see the new ALW". Involving Meat Loaf - not in any creative way and definitely NOT on the stage - will pull in casual fans who own the album. If they read in the paper that the musical is the orignal story of "Bat out of Hell", the musical that never was, the inspiration for all these songs...AND they read a quote or two from Meat raving about it, saying he'll be there on the opening night - then you could well have a hit on your hands. It's not about Meat stealing Jim's thunder or any of this rubbish that you love to keep spouting. It's simply the best thing that can happen to make the musical a success. | |
