Operatic Annihilation!!! Love it... another song title (should be a song for Hook)??

My first recollection of 'Bat' was in 1978 when a kid at school, who was into 'heavy metal'(I wasn't at the time) mentioned this great new song with a 2 minute intro.

My limited knowledge of music back then was that songs (and the vocals) just started straight away and a 2 minute intro sounded ridiculous ('Bat' was too remain unheard, for now).

Circa 1981/82 'Deadringer For Love' was a big hit in the UK, which led me to buying 'Hits Out Of Hell' in (I think) 1984, purely for 'DFL'.

I then got to hear 'Bat' for the first time and it was a complete fucking revelation.

Firstly, the great piano riff intro sounded like something from another world (how the fuck do they play that fast I thought), and I had never heard piano like it before.

Second, the line 'oh baby you're the only thing in this whole world, that's pure and good and right, and wherever you are and wherever you go, there's always gonna be some light' just sounded like the most perfect lines ever! They are the best lines in 'Bat', and probably one of Jim's best lyrics.

Thirdly, the 'Hits Out Of Hell' album came with no lyric sheet insert, so I never could work out all the lyrics, which added an element of mystery to the song.

'Silver black phantom bike' and 'tolling a bell' bugged me for years, but in 1988 (I think), I got a CD copy with the lyrics, and most of my questions were answered.

However, getting the (proper)'Bat' album for the first time (instead of HooH) prompted another question...who was the geezer on the back with Meat Loaf? Up to now, I had no idea (or interest) who had written the songs.

After several months of investigation a friend said 'oh that's Steinman the songwriter'. Ah, Jim Steinman the name on the front of the album cover, he writes some great stuff. This led me to purchasing 'Deadringer' soon after, followed by the Bonnie Tyler stuff & Air Supply in quick succession, and then Pandora's Box on the day of it's release.

Getting back to 'Bat' it 'aint my favourite Steinman song (it's in my top ten though), but it's the one song I think that has a completely unique vibe about it. It is Steinman but then again like no other Steinman track. As soon as you turn it on it takes you to another place/another dimension (I always think of the Twilight Zone rather than Neverland or Psycho).

It's a genius creation and deserves all the awards it can get (and all the awards it can't get too)!

I'm also waiting for the day Disney turn it into a ride (now that is the ultimate acolade - LOL)!

Bravo Meat! Bravo Roy Bittan! Bravo Todd Rundgren! Bravo Jim Steinman!!

NB - Please feel free to share your 'Bat' recollections.
