| This is a separate thread, but I sort of intended these BAT tribute ideas to be on the same CD, or at least part of the same set if not all of the songs could fit on one CD. (Again, for those who saw the BAT I thread, consider the Abba pairing dead in the water and come up with a better one. Pudding's not far from the truth where the inspiration for that one came from. The rest of the choices, I stand by with conviction.) I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That) - Evanescence This song is the reason the band was formed, and in terms of sound, with the right production, it could easily be their next hit, and an unlikely one at that, but Evanescence could make it work. Life Is a Lemon and I Want My Money Back - Queen + Someone Other Than Paul Rodgers This track seems tailor-made for them. The intro under the vocals is reminiscent of the drums and handclaps of "We Will Rock You," and the guitar battle at the end is worthy of Brian May's talents. All they need is a vocalist who sounds like a decent facsimile of Freddie and a classic Queen-style vocal arrangement for parts of the song (think of the Bismillah bits from "Bohemian Rhapsody" applied to the "What about love" section). Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through - Elton John This one was a little hard to choose, and initially I had it in mind for an entirely different artist, but ultimately I was convinced that this was more suited to Elton's voice than to the other artist I had it planned for. It Just Won't Quit - Tina Turner I initially thought of Tina for RnR Dreams for some reason 'cause the '93 arrangement suited the swampy vibe of such singles as "What's Love Got to Do With It" and I felt it would complement her voice nicely, but then I thought of "It Just Won't Quit" and it clicked, and not just because Jim originally did it with a female vocalist either. She's got that classic tragic female figure aspect simply because of her history with Ike and how she bootstrapped her way out of her own hell, and how hard it must be to fall in love again after something like that is another angle that I think this song easily expresses. Out of the Frying Pan (And Into the Fire) - The Darkness Not for any particular reason, I'd just really like to see what spin they can give it. Objects in the Rear View Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are - Aerosmith I initially wouldn't have pegged this one, but then I remembered when trying to select a good artist that this song was always, to me at least, more ballad and less power, in contrast to all of Meat and Jim's stuff together. Compared to the rest of the bands that do power ballads, Aerosmith seem almost understated. I thought that this would be a really interesting and good take. Wasted Youth - Jim Carrey Come on, don't tell me you haven't imagined doing this one. He could easily pull this monologue off, in his usual equally deadpan and OTT manner. Everything Louder than Everything Else - Tenacious D I thought this would sound funny in their take. I mean, two guys with acoustic guitars, one of whom sounds larger than life, pretending they're rocking hard and raging in the cage. It's a knowing wink at the song, and I'd love to see it, never mind hear it. Good Girls Go to Heaven (Bad Girls Go Everywhere) - Rihanna, Britney Spears, et al. Number one: For the big sweaty men out there, this would make a hell of a video. Number two: With some minor changes in arrangement, this could easily be a pop/rock record today in the vein of Rihanna's "Shut Up and Drive." Number three: Since I couldn't think of any one artist who'd be sexy enough to do the video (this is the token pop choice bit to make the kids buy the CD, the vocals are always cleaned up anyway), I figured turn it into a divas number like the remake of "Lady Marmalade". Pick some divas, toss 'em in the mix, let me know! Back into Hell - Chick Corea Elektric Band vs. Steve Vai's Monsters These guys did a rocked-up version of the Rumble from "West Side Story" on a similar tribute CD, and since I've always sort of pictured this song as the battle between the kid and the bat on the cover, then what better to do than make it sound like an actual battle and not some kid messing around with a synthesizer? Lost Boys and Golden Girls - Keane After hearing "Somewhere Only We Know," I thought these guys could handle this haunting piano ballad pretty well. Got any choices of your own? Let's see 'em! | |
