I disagree with you there.. I really don't mind when an artist, or aspiring artist, gives their own interpretation of a song rather than trying to copy someone else's earlier rendition... but I do think you have to understand the concept and sense the emotion behind the lyrics to be able to perform a song properly.

I like it when people sing songs own their way, rather than try to sound like Meat or Bonnie or Elaine or whoever (no disrespect)... but I hate it when they butcher the song into something else just because that's the stuff they prefer singing...

If you miss the point of the song, it doesn't matter how good a singer you are, but you fail to convey the emotion of the song to your audience and are therefore a lousy performer and artist, in my not very humble opinion.
A perfect example for that is Whitney Houston singing I will always love you... perfect rendition... what a voice... but where's the feeling?? Any computer with vocal chords could have produced that version.........
