It's a common misconception that the novel is soppy drivel.

I had to read it for college years ago, and I was expecting the same, but it really surprised me. It's certainly not your average romance - and it's quite horrific in parts, with more in common with a gothic horror novel than Mills & Boon.

If you want soppy drivel, then read her sister Charlotte's novel Vilette. That's 300 odd pages of my life that I'm nver gonna get back. :-(
