Well I like the casting shows because...

1. They have very little to do, if anything, in how well the actual musicals are written/staged/directed.

By doing a casting show, the artistic quality of the actual musical doesn't magically go down the dumper overnight?

2. Oliver, Joseph & SOM have all been well received by the critics (including the person cast), so I would suggest the quality of these shows remained intact, despite the TV casting?

3. The three casting shows ALW has done were well produced, good TV, and probably the best promotion any ALW shows have ever had.

4. You cannot get better promotion than prime-time TV on a Saturday night, over 10-12 weeks.

In fact, I think Oliver broke all advance box office records (for the West End).

The casting element is secondary and I view these shows as promotion only, and by far the best promotion you can do.

Far superior to posters on the tube/buses and/or concept CD's (although they play their part).

Smegs argument tends to suggest as little promo as possible, and keeping the show 'small', will guarantee artistic quality, which is probably Rinkoff's philosophy as well?

I say promote the hell out of it (no pun intended) with a TV casting show top of the list!
