All I know is that if I ever want to see any of my work on the stage, I have to produce it myself. Remember I live in Australia so there isn’t this Broadway/West End culture happening and everything is more sports oriented. “Cats”, “Les Misérables”, “The Phantom of the Opera”, “Miss Saigon”, “Mamma Mia!” and “Wicked” have typically been our biggest successes in the last 30 years and none of those are Australia made. I can’t remember the last time a major new Australian musical - with all new music and lyrics - was mounted aside from “Eureka!” which was a flop.

Regional theatres (because we want to produce a tryout) won’t even listen to us. Even when I tried to get them to produce something by Jim they wouldn’t listen because it hadn’t been done on Broadway. They produce shows like “Carousel”, “My Fair Lady”, “Fiddler on the Roof”, “Jesus Christ Superstar”, “Les Misérables” (that’s a really popular one) and anything Andrew Lloyd Webber they can get their hands on. And then you have the latest stuff like “Bare” and “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” which have just released their rights and, of course, all the regional theatres are clamoring to produce it. Jee, do I sound bitter?

Klasien, we both know real depression in our own different ways.

I was on a forum the other night where we produced a record number of replies on this major Australian website discussing the problem with the development of new theatre in this country. I was told by several important people who have all worked extensively in the theatre that if I ever want to see my work onstage, or anyone else who hasn’t been to Broadway, it would all be out of my pocket or anyone else willing to help me. So at the moment Adam (the composer of “Don Claude”) and I have a workable draft, a promo CD with songs containing up to 120 tracks fully produced, and members of the local theatre community singing its praises but unwilling to back us because because that just isn’t how it’s done here at the moment.

As I type this message, I am about to meet with the owners of a beautiful regional theatre to discuss D.C. and to tell them Adam and I (two guys in our twenties) need to raise AU $3000 to cover the costs. I guess our producing experience has begun.

I don’t know what it’s like in London. I can certainly imagine all the producers on “Bat” going through hell (no pun intended) trying to raise the money? Cause as genius and successful as Jim is, his last show was still “Dance of the Vampires”. But I have faith, don’t get me wrong.
