I just watched this again last night. I love, love, love the original Broadway cast recording with Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury, and the stage production itself (and Hal Prince directed both "Sweeney Todd" and "Phantom of the Opera", as well as producing "Fiddler on the Roof" and "Cabaret", LUCKY MAN!)

The film is not the stage show but it is what it is and it is probably my favourite Tim Burton film. "Batman Returns" and "Sleepy Hollow" are up there, make no mistake, but I love "Sweeney". Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham-Carter play the two leads with such subtlety that is almost intense, and there's so much bubbling underneath the surface of these two characters. Timothy Spall, I thought, was particularly memorable and he has never disappointed me in anything that I've seen in him. Alan Rickman (SNAPE!!!) was fantastic as well, and I'll always remember him from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, "I'll cut your heart out with a spoon!"

The movie has never really bothered me, scare-wise, until last night, when it dawned on me EVEN MORE just how horrifying it would have been for Tobias to be trapped in the bakehouse, looking at the dead bodies as they were to be minced into pies. I suddenly felt very claustrophobic. And chills went all through me when the Beadle fell through the chute and IN A SPLIT SECOND you could see his brains pop out when he hit the floor.

It's fantastic, a fantastic film, and the best movie musical to have ever been made, IMHO, since "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" all the way back in 1975. I couldn't even be bothered watching "Chicago". I've never been interested in any Kander and Ebb musicals, ever (Though perhaps that should change.)

The one thing I wished they had done though was shoot the sequence from the stage show where the lunatics bust out of bedlam and run riot all over London singing/screeching/raving and drooling "CITY ON FIRE!"

Oh, and another thing, to know what ended up happening with poor Toby!
