I missed this a couple of years ago but Dave Stewart re-worked his songs using a rock orchestra AND managed to release a double CD:

I wish The Dream Engine could have got to this stage, especially using live strings & horns for shows.
Still think it could be a valid project.
On the subject of Dave Stewart he's written Ghost The Musical (with Glen Ballard) and the songs sound really good:
