| This was mentioned below so I came up with a rough list of what's been reused over the last 40 years. By all means, discuss, debate and add to it QUOTE: THE INVOCATION AND FORMATION OF THE TRIBE. "Turn around" would form the verses for "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" after they featured, musically, as a love theme in "A Small Circle Of Friends". An abridged version with the chorus would appear in Meat Loaf's 1982 tour (performed by Ted Neely). WHO NEEDS THE YOUNG? The music for the opening verses would become the opening half of "In The Crypt" in "Tanz Der Vampire" HYMN TO FIRE (WHEN YOUR CITY'S BURNING). The opening riff would become "The Storm" on "Bad For Good" and then the Overture for "Tanz Der Vampire" ENTR'ACTE. All three sections were later recycled, the first becoming the guitar solo in "Stark Raving Love" on "Bad For Good", the second becoming "Happy Ending" for Yvonne Elliman and the climax, which was also a full song "Song Of The Dream Engine (Hear The Screams)" would become the second half of "Bad For Good" MOTHER RIVER SONG. This is based on GANGES RIVER from Bertolt Brecht's play "A Man's A Man" which, in a production at Amherst College, happened to be Jim's first professional score. SONG OF THE DREAM ENGINE (HEAR THE SCREAMS). Musically, and the lines "God speed", would appear as the second half of "Bad For Good" LET THE REVELS BEGIN. Musically, this reappears as the intro to the Neverland version of "All Revved Up With No Place To Go", later combined with the Meat Loaf '82 tour rendition of "Come In The Night". The lines "let the revels begin" were most famously reused in "Tonight Is What It Means To Be Young" CHINKACHAIN. "Forging and toiling... and seething and boiling" is the music for the instrumental in "The Graveyard Shift", before the end. The instrumental that takes the song out would form a substantial part in "The Hunt" from "Neverland", an instrumental sequence as Tink is expelled from the pack MASTER OF THE EARTH. This features the first (as far as we know) appearance of the little "Hunt" riff that became the opening of "The Hunt" in "Neverland", appearing in nearly all of Jim's theatrical scores HUSHABYE. This sounds like an operatic version of "Midnight Serenade" ("Our love is a secret / Our love is a word...") FINALE (RAINBOW). The opening riff would become a more specific intro to "Lost Boys And Golden Girls" (someone with musical understanding explain this) and then the full song would be pasted in as the second half of "Song Of The City Of Hope" in "More Than You Deserve" the musical THE SONG OF DEFENSELESSNESS (The Good Person Of Szechuan). This has very similar lyrics to Jim's lyrics for "Gods" in "Neverland". Jim scored a production of this Brecht play in the early 1970s. MORE THAN YOU DESERVE OVERTURE. This features the second appearance of the little "Hunt" riff (take note of this) GIVE ME THE SIMPLE LIFE. The dance routine is the music for the second half of "Mother River Song" in "The Dream Engine" while the second half of the song is the second half of "Bad For Good" COME WITH ME. The introduction to one of Jim's favourite chord progressions forming the basis of the verses in "For Crying Out Loud", the conclusion to "Let The Revels Begin", a slight variation in "Tonight Is What It Means To Be Young", the chorus for "The Future Ain't What It Used To Be" and the opening and closing verse of "Seize The Night" (and these are only the known uses!) TO FEEL SO NEEDED. It begins to sound like the music for "Something Of This Masquerade May Follow" from "The Confidence Man" but then it changes. It's quite possible Jim revisited this for inspiration for that song. Of course "Masquerade" would musically form the choruses of "Braver Than We Are" GO GO GO GUERILLAS. Only the intro is recycled as "The Joker's Song (Wonderful Toys)" in "Batman". IF ONLY. The lines "if only..." are the same as "Carpe Noctem..." which the monks chant in "Seize The Night" SONG OF THE GOLDEN EGG. The chorus, or the upbeat section, reappears in "God Has Left The Building" over the top of a piece recycled from the instrumental of the Neverland version of "All Revved Up" (which, when orchestrated, became the symphonic climax to "The Storm". Following?) PRIVATE OF PRIVATES. This has the same intro as "Death Is Such An Odd Thing" from "Tanz Der Vampire" and the same chord progression as "It's Your Life" from "The Confidence Man", but only in the verses. The second half becomes the first bit of the instrumental of the "Neverland" version of "All Revved Up" which was played at the end of "Come In The Night" on Meat Loaf's 1982 tour (ending with the upbeat finale to "The Hunt" from "Neverland") now famously recycled as the bridge in "Holding Out For A Hero" (the underscoring behind "Out where the mountains meet the heavens above...") NEW ORLEANS IS COMIN' TO ME. The whole song is musically (and some lyrically) recycled as "The Future Ain't What It Used To Be" dropping the lively "Means Somethin'" sequence EDGING INTO DARKNESS. The music for the first and second verses and the two choruses is the music for the second half of "Bad For Good". The next bit ("I'd sacrifice myself at any price...") became the guitar solo on "Bat Out Of Hell" finishing up with ("Steal away, angel, steal away...") which is the intro / classic opening riff to "Making Love Out Of Nothing At All". Before its hit appearance, it was another theme in "A Small Circle Of Friends" METHINKS. This has been referred to as a careful variation of the tune for "Go Go Go Guerillas" obviously without the Joker riff. NOCTURNALLY YOURS. The opening riff became another theme in "A Small Circle Of Friends" and the climactic verses in "Dark Night Of The Soul" in "Garbo: The Musical" PAIN HUMBLES. This features the third appearance of the little "Hunt" riff, the instrumental becoming a part of "The Storm" MILADY. The whole tune was removed as underscoring for "A Small Circle Of Friends" then made over, musically, with a new key change, as "For Sarah" in "Tanz Der Vampire" SOMETHING OF THIS MASQUERADE MAY FOLLOW. The music for the first two lines of each chorus is the chorus for "Braver Than We Are" from "Tanz Der Vampire". The second bit is the music for the verses of the Rory Dodd / Everly Bros. version of "A Kiss Is A Terrible Thing To Waste". The song ends with a reprise of the chorus of "New Orleans" which is that same "Come With Me" riff endlessly reused. ALL REVVED UP WITH NO PLACE TO GO. The first half of the instrumental for the "Neverland" version would be drawn upon for "God Has Left The Building" in "Dance Of The Vampires". The second half became the intro to "Bat Out Of Hell" in the Meat Loaf version CITY NIGHT. This was musically recycled as "Bless The Night / Bless The Man" in "Tanz Der Vampire" when Krolock welcomes Professor Abronsius and Alfred to his castle. This is interspersed with parts of "Midnight Serenade" ("Our love is a secret...") which appeared in "Neverland" too MIDNIGHT SERENADE. The instrumental with the monologue is very close to the conclusion for Jim's version for "Left In The Dark" GODS. Recycled as "Bolero", the opening instrumental of Meat's original 70s tour, finally used as the music for "Eternity" in "Tanz Der Vampire" YOU TOOK THE WORDS RIGHT OUT OF MY MOUTH. The music for the opening lines ("It was a hot summer night and the beach was burning / There was fog crawling over the sand...") is the same as the music for the chorus in "Read 'Em And Weep" ("If I could only find the words then I would write it all down / If I could only find the voice I would speak...") DELTA HOUSE THEME. The music is the embryo for "Dead Ringer For Love" concluding with the lines "The things they say and the things they do" which reappear in "Tonight Is What It Means To Be Young" THE STORM. This features the fourth appearance of the little "Hunt" riff in the second half STARK RAVING LOVE. Yes, the intro is most obviously the same intro for "Holding Out For A Hero" except slower. OUT OF THE FRYING PAN (AND INTO THE FIRE). Features the same intro as the Rory Dodd / Everly Bros. version of "A Kiss Is A Terrible Thing To Waste" SURF'S UP. The intro became the instrumental in "The Future Ain't What It Used To Be" and then the music for the new sections of "Angels Arise" in its "Dance Of The Vampires" incarnation ("There are things that must be magic / No explaining why or how..." etc.) while the opening lines are the same musically as the opening lines for "Objects In The Rear View Mirror" MORE THAN YOU DESERVE. The intro for the "Dead Ringer" version reappears as the intro for "The Future Ain't What It Used To Be". It also became the "Overture" and the intro for "Something Of This Masquerade May Follow" written for the 1986 production of "The Confidence Man" I'LL KILL YOU IF YOU DON'T COME BACK. The last bits (i.e. "Damn you / And curse you / After all that you've done / You're the one girl I'll never forget...") are similar to the last bit in "Confession Of A Vampire" ("I believe in just one god / That of endless and insatiable / Amoral, indestructible / And all consuming appetite...") from "Tanz Der Vampire" NOWHERE FAST. The "Streets Of Fire" uses a riff from "The Storm" as its intro. The song climaxes with "God speed..." most famously used in "Bad For Good" TONIGHT IS WHAT IT MEANS TO BE YOUNG. Made over as "Dance Of The Vampires", the finale for "Tanz Der Vampire" HULK HOGAN'S THEME. This is, basically, the instrumental track for "Ravishing" on "Secret Dreams And Forbidden Fire" LOVING YOU IS A DIRTY JOB. The intro first appears as a theme in "A Small Circle Of Friends" REBEL WITHOUT A CLUE. The intro is similar to the intro to "You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth" except darker and grittier. ORIGINAL SIN. This would become a major theme in "Tanz Der Vampire" SAFE SEX. The lines "We'll never be as young as this / No matter how we try we grow..." etc. are the same, musically, as "You'll always be here with me / You're a ghost and I've been cursed..." REQUIEM METAL. The screaming voices of the choir are sampled in the intro for "Rude Awakening" and later in the intense part of the Bat II "Wasted Youth" monologue THE OPENING OF THE BOX. This is a sample of the actual track for the second half of "The Storm", documenting the fifth appearance of the little "Hunt" riff. IT JUST WON'T QUIT. The intro and the opening verse is the music for "Melville's Theme" in "The Confidence Man", not recorded for the CD THE FUTURE AIN'T WHAT IT USED TO BE. Begins with the intro's from "More Than You Deserve" and "Something Of This Masquerade May Follow", goes into the main song which is, musically and structurally, "New Orleans Is Comin' To Me", climaxing with the instrumental being the intro to "Surf's Up" finishing off with a reference to "For Crying Out Loud", the brief soft piano bit that bridges the gigantic chorus to the finale of the song. MORE. The chorus by Jim Steinman was fully expanded into a song for "Batman" and believably "Bat Out Of Hell 2100" OBJECTS IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR. Jim would cleverly recycle the tune in a new dramatic / operatic version for "Tanz Der Vampire" EVERYTHING LOUDER THAN EVERYTHING ELSE. The opening verses resemble the verses for "Garlic" in "Tanz Der Vampire" BACK INTO HELL. The crazy little riff introduced in the Bat II version of "Good Girls Go To Heaven" became the lead-in for the upbeat section of "Seize The Night" THE GRAVEYARD SHIFT. A clever re-invention of the second half of "Bad For Good" THE CATWOMAN'S SONG (I NEED ALL THE LOVE I CAN GET). This features the sixth appearance of the little "Hunt" riff then, with this exact track, utilized in versions of "God Has Left The Building". CITY OF BLACK AND WHITE. This features the last major theme to be recycled from "A Small Circle Of Friends" given a fresh new extension and lively variation DARK NIGHT OF THE SOUL. The "dark night! dark night!" bit is the same as the second half of "Mother River Song" except a lot more dramatic and powerful CRY TO HEAVEN. The second recycling of the Batman "Angels Arise" | |
