| I remember being 9-years old in the summer of 1983 and visiting my grandparents with my family. I was sitting on the bed watching the adults and children mingling. The radio was on and slowly I started to listen the song playing on the radio more closely and really liking the song. When the music starts to end there is still a voice singing 'turn around bright eyes' with a sound like a wind blowing in the background...It goes on about a minute and when I'm listening to this I'm thinking "That's an angel singing". The voice sounded angelic to me. That's what I imagined an angel singing would sound like. First time I ever thought any religious imagery when hearing a song on the radio. I was totally mesmerized, thinking of an angel singing and then slowly disappearing to somewhere when the song ended... A really magical moment that I still remember vividly from my childhood. Later I found out that the voice belonged to Rory Dodd, not to an angel who as a child I thought came down from heaven for a minute to sing the fade out in 'Total Eclipse of the Heart'. :) In 1993 I discovered Steinman properly when 'Bat out of Hell 2' became a big hit...and also realized that the fade out I heard as a child in 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' wasn't written by God but Jim Steinman. :) | |
