I was watching "Batman" last night and I couldn't help but notice how "Phantom" it all seemed in the church-tower ("Phantom" AND "The King And I") So, I thought... Would Michael Crawford have made a better Joker in "Batman: The Musical"? Let's face it. After 9/11 "Dance Of The Vampires" should have been axed from Broadway. It would have spared a lot of misery. Polanski would never be able to do it and it should have been done in the West End first. I really think it would have found its feet there, in the original version. Example, here is Jack Nicholson romancing and dancing with Vicki Vale in Gotham City Cathedral: ![]() (Image working?) Now here is Michael Crawford romancing and dancing with Christine (in an eerie reminder of The Joker) in the video for "The Music Of The Night" ![]() Watch the video for "The Music Of The Night". It's on "The Phantom Of The Opera" DVD as a bonus. He seems SO JOKER in that video w/ Nicholson in the Cathedral as some kind of warped tribute to the video and the production (professional critics have noticed this too). Crawford wanted a role that was different from The Phantom. Everything Crawford does is larger-than-life. The Joker is excessive, psychologically fascinating and completely over the top. It's a comic role with depth and irony because the Joker is a cold-blooded killer planting death-smiles on the faces of his victims. I think "Vampires" should have been scrapped from Broadway, moving ahead with "Batman" with Burton directing and Crawford as The Joker. At least if he re-wrote his part it wouldn't be so obvious | |
