| Never seen the film (Run Silent, Run Deep), but always thought of submarines, when listening to Read 'Em & Weep. Love the lines: 'It's there in my eyes, and coming straight from the heart, it's running silent & angry & deep...' which, to me, is a great analogy with submarines...a strong & emotionally menacing power, emerging from the dark. Presuming Jim has seen the film Network (1976), I always thought he would have turned the nervous breakdown rant of 'I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not gonna take it anymore' into a song or spoken word piece ? Also think the motor industry (in particular wing mirrors) has had an influence on Jim (LOL): "That phrase I would see all the time, cos I don't drive, so I'm always in the passenger seat, and I would always be looking at this weird mysterious phrase 'objects in rear view mirror, are closer than they appear', and in my mind it got scrambled to '...may appear closer than they are', and I guess it just became, it just immediately suggested ghosts to me, and the past, and I thought it was a fairly transcendent, thrilling image about ghosts. That the things you leave behind you, may seem to be with you, even though they're not. They may always seem to be in the back seat'. (Jim on writing 'Objects...' - Radio 1, 1994) > Watched the movie Run Silent, Run Deep (Gable, Lancaster) > on TV tonight and while the movie is nothing special to me > - it reminded me of the huge and vast influence art & > media has had on Jim's work....every great phrase, every > great scene, every joke, every cliche...EVERY INFLUENCE > IMAGINABLE...every everything... > > HE REMEMBERED EVERYTHING! And used it... > > Jim is the Master Chef of SNOUT TO TAIL > songwriting...nothing wasted...and soooooo delicious. > > Hungry Jack...in the "Insatiable Appetite" zone :) | |
