Good luck to them on the musicals. Broadway is such a corpse, I think. "The Pirate Queen", the latest musical from Boublil and Schoenberg ("Les Miserables", "Miss Saigon") got universally negative reviews. It'll be interesting to see how long it plays. For the last seven years most of the new shows have been dropping off like flies. You don't see any astronomical runs anymore, you don't see any phenomenal success stories like ALW and Alan Menken and (to a lesser degree) Frank Wildhorn, "Dance Of The Vampires" was our chance to get Steinman on Broadway with a true operatic THEATRICAL sound but that was slaughtered, "Taboo" by Boy George didn't last long either, all the jukebox musicals were worthless so you couldn't even make a quick cash-in (I reference "Good Vibrations", "All Shook Up", "The Times They Are A-Changin'"), "In My Life" from Joe Brooks was a SPECTACULAR flop, "The Woman In White" just proved that ALW has lost his Midas hand, "Lestat" from Elton John and Bernie Taupin outranked "Dance Of The Vampires" as the greatest flop in Bway history, Disney didn't make any magic out of "Tarzan", and now this. Really, what happened to the 70s and 80s? Where are the Sondheims? the Webbers? the great success-stories and the artistic smashes. Don't get me wrong, there are still good shows being written but they're hardly household names. There has to be a change. All writers deserve to have a chance because it's possible they're doing better stuff than any of the multitude of Bway flops in the last 7 years. Still, good luck to em | |
