Perhaps you are right about it not being in the show's design, clearly it isn't in the submissions of demos. But I also think that Jim does not shave with you looking in the mirror with him. Indeed the chronology of their presentations are fully off. But, Wilbury may have accidentally hit upon a contextual fit. It was fun to entertain it, and see how they would go together.
