The station is split between all of the above. It used to be that during the day, the DJ's had playlists that were generated by the programming staff or a computer, and at night the DJ would be able to play what they want. One prominent DJ has that as his calling card, calling it "free form radio" but my guy can do the same thing if he wanted to in the middle of the night, though he takes the station's suggestions more often than not...I can hear when he plays a particular song and I get a kick out of it. His personality is much different, but then maybe I'm biased....he has opinions, just used the word, "untamed" to describe himself at this particular moment, and so it could be as you described. He's quite the spark.
