Why would you set it in modern time? I love the Burton films because they're so mythic and operatic. I mean, who could be a better musical villain than the Joker? Danny DeVito's Penguin is the iconic grotesque, like something out of Wagner, Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman. "Batman Returns" is the most amazing gothic / operatic film I've probably seen. Going modern and realistic and less OTT than that wouldn't appeal to me. But that's what I've heard. And, I'm sorry, I think Jack Nicholson is irreplacable as the Joker. In my mind, no one else could be more perfect in the part. I love Burton's franchise, flaws and all, and I definitely see it being the musical DEFINITELY with Steinman's music. If I enjoyed the Burton ones (don't care for the Shoemaker ones) would I like this? | |
