... was budgeted at (US) $18 million for a Broadway production that was supposed to happen last year. It's been talked about since the 90s but the show has been constantly delayed. I've seen pictures of what the set will look like and it's absolutely tremendous, some of the best design I've seen for a musical since "Sunset Boulevard" and "Tanz Der Vampire". It's now premiering out-of-town sometime next year. I hope it makes the transfer. What's more surprising is that Jill is a newcomer. I hope this goes well for her. As for the musical, I don't think "Bat Out Of Hell" will exactly be a conventional musical. From the way Jim describes it's more like a circus event, like Cirque Du Soleil (the costume designer Eiko Ishioka did "Varekai") so it's probably nothing like a conventional Broadway / West End musical. If you ask me, after "Dance Of The Vampires", that's probably exactly what Jim wants. > Article in the Daily Mail (UK) today, about Lord of The > Rings (opening in Drury Lane in a few weeks). > > Apparently it has got 'state of the art' sets, > mechanicals, sound etc etc and is budgeted at 'only' $15 > million. > > I haven't heard of any musicals to date, topping $15 > million. > > $50 milion is nonsense; too much of a risk (for a > musical), and too long to recoup. > > In regards to producer fees, I have absolutely no idea > what top producers can currently charge, but $200 million > to produce Bat 3 is absolute nonsense (for a start Meat or > the record company would not have made any money). > > I've read recently that Rodney Jerkins can command up to > $100,000 per track, and Scott Storch $40-50,000 per > track. > > I would think Jim is one of the most expensive producers > in the world, and I would guess he was offered anywhere > between $1-2million to produce Bat 3 (depending on how > many songs), with maybe a percentage deal on sales as > well? > > > > > I imagine there are quite a few 'theatre people' willing > > > to invest in 'Bat Out of Hell', but Jim probably > > > wants/needs $15-20 million?? > > > > Based on what Jim's described, there are not many unknown > > producers who would pull a show off like this.
